Essay OSGDS

An Incredible Journey

It has been a wonderful year, we started our project created by Miss Libia and we were guide by Luis Hernández. They helped us through the journey of becoming a sustainable school and were almost there.

Our project started with brainstorming, and then we did a power point presentation and our scale model. After, we had a trip to the Rochester School and we learned about sustainability, they told us they spend a lot of money but it was worth it. Finally, we wrote a song and we presented our power point presentations. We have been visited by many people like Natalia Giraldo and Juna Parra from the Minister of the Environment and Sustainability development, also by 11th graders Vanesa Trujillo and Nicolás Poveda and also by Luis Hernández. My opinion on our project is positive since it is useful to help our school become sustainable. We asked people in our community and they told us that Abraham Lincoln is in the process of becoming sustainable and this project will guide us or help us achieve this goal.

During this project I have learned many things like the real meaning of becoming a green and sustainable school, and it's not just having campaigns to help the environment or activities to get an environmental consciousness. To be a real sustainable school means to have 3 aspects; social, environmental and economical and our school certainly has the economical and social aspect but I consider and our community as well that we do not have the environmental aspect.

In conclusion, I think our school should take this opportunity because there are not many sustainable schools in Colombia and this would be an honor for our country and our school. This project will also help our future generations and with this project we our one step closer of achieving our dream: a sustainable green dream school.

Final Version: The War of the Brides

The War of the Brides

Once upon a time, in a little town near England, there once lived a young and beautiful maiden called Linda. She lived alone with her dog called Spot; she had been in a very long relationship with a man called Brandon. Her best friend was Molly, a young and very beautiful girl; she had been in a very long relationship too. They were the best of friends until one day…

Linda and Brandon were really close and she thought soon he would propose to her marriage. One day they went on a date since it was their one year anniversary, Brandon took her to the best restaurant in town and he proposed to her and she accepted. Linda was now the happiest person on earth since she was engaged.

Linda started organizing her wedding, she got a beautiful venue which was in a lake, she hired a catering service and the food was great and she bought her wedding dress. She was only missing to choose her bridesmaid, her maid of honor and their dresses. She got many of her high school friends to be her bridesmaids and she already had in mind to call Molly to ask her to be her maid of honor.

Linda called Molly and she said “Hi Molly!” and Molly answered “Hi Linda!” Linda said “I was wondering if you wanted to be my maid of honor?” Molly answered surprised “I was wondering the same thing!” Linda answered “How come?” and Molly answered “Well, after many years of dating my boyfriend finally proposed!” Linda answered “Congratulations! And who is the lucky guy?” Molly answered “His name is Kevin and he is very sweet, smart and handsome!” Linda answered “Great, now will you be my bridesmaid” Molly answered “Yes and will you be mine?” Linda answered “Yes, we should set a date to meet our Fiancé’s” Molly agreed and they said goodbye.

The next day Linda arrived at the café Molly and Linda agreed, Brandon told her he would arrive there. Molly arrived and told her that her fiancé would arrive as well there. When Linda saw Brandon walking she said “There he comes!” Molly said “That’s my Fiancé!” Linda got surprised and stopped talking. Brandon saw Linda and Molly and went away scared.

Linda stood up said goodbye to Molly; she stayed at home thinking if Brandon was cheating on her. The next day she called Molly and asked her “Molly was that guy you saw your fiancé?” Molly answered “Yes, that’s Kevin. Why are you asking?” Linda answered “Because that’s Brandon my fiancé!” Molly surprised said “We should talk with him and ask him if he has a twin brother or what’s happening?” Linda agreed and the next day they would talk with Brandon or Kevin.

That day Linda and Molly met at the same café and Brandon or Kevin arrived, he said “Hi girls, I wanted to talk to you and I knew you were going to ask me to come here!” Linda and Molly said at the same time “Explain!” Brandon or Kevin explained “ My real name is Thomas and I’m in love with both of you and I don’t know what to decide so I need you both to understand that I will choose who will I marry in a week and you will know because I will show up there!” Linda and Molly asked “But how will you decide if you love us both?” he answered “I will know because I will miss her a lot, so until the wedding goodbye and may the best one win!” after this he stood up and left.

Both Linda and Molly found out they had their wedding planned for the same day and that they had their venues right next to each other. Both of them started competing to see who made the best wedding. The day of the wedding both of them were dressed and they were really nervous, Molly thought Thomas would pick her since she always got what she wanted, and Linda thought he wouldn’t pick her. Thomas was there and both of them were anxious, Thomas stood up and said “I pick you, Linda” Linda full of happiness hugged him.

Molly really angry took a gun and started killing all the people in the wedding and finally she killed Linda her best friend, Thomas shouted “Look what you have done? This is why I didn’t choose you, you’re beautiful outside but not inside and I prefer inner beauty than appearances”

Molly heard these words and shot herself, now in every wedding in this venue you always hear the sound of a bullet and someone crying.

Final Version Article: Athena

Athena

A goddess to be inspired by but with some secrets…

In Greek religion and mythology, Athena or Athene also referred to as Palas Athena/Athene is the goddess of wisdom, courage, inspiration, civilization, law and justice, just warfare, mathematics, strength, strategy, the arts, crafts and skill. Minerva is the Roman goddess identified with Athena.

Athena is also a shrewd companion of heroes and is the goddess of heroic endeavor or effort. She is the virgin patroness of Athens. The Athenians founded the Parthenon (which is one of the largest Doric temples) on the Acropolis of her namesake city, Athens in her honour.

Athena's veneration as the patron of Athens seems to have existed from the earliest times and was so persistent that archaic myths about her were recast to adapt to cultural changes. In her role as a protector of the city (polis), many people throughout the Greek world worshiped Athena as Athena Polias ("Athena of the city"). The city of Athens and the goddess Athena essentially bear the same name (Athena the Goddess, Athenai the city) while it is not known which of the two words is derived from the other.

Athena daughter of Zeus, father of the gods (known in Roman mythology as Jupiter) and Metis, goddess of crafty thought and wisdom (known in Roman mythology as Metis). Athena was born fully armed from head to toe from her father’s forehead. With many versions, in the one most commonly cited, Zeus lay with Metis, but he immediately feared the consequences. It had been prophesied that Metis would bear children more powerful than the sire, even Zeus himself.

In order to forestall these dire consequences, after lying with Metis, Zeus "put her away inside his own belly;" he "swallowed her down all of a sudden." He was too late: Metis had already conceived.

Eventually Zeus experienced an enormous headache; Prometheus, Hephaestus, Hermes, Ares, or Palaemon (depending on the sources examined) cleaved Zeus's head with the double-headed Minoan axe, the labrys.

Athena leaped from Zeus's head, fully grown and armed, with a shout— "and pealed to the broad sky her clarion cry of war. And Ouranos trembled to hear, and Mother Gaia..." (Pindar, Seventh Olympian Ode). Plato, in the Laws, attributes the cult of Athena to the culture of Crete, introduced, he thought, from Libya during the dawn of Greek culture.

I chose this character because I really like her sacred bird, which is the little owl. I also like her qualities of wisdom, courage, inspiration, civilization, law and justice, just warfare, mathematics, strength, strategy, the arts, crafts and skill since most of them help women or people to get their dreams or to stand up. Finally, Athena resembles or could be considered to be the goddess of the intelligence since most of this qualities are math and strategies and I prefer being intelligent than beautiful.

The Secret Of The Swans

In the far away land of Greece; there once lived a maiden called Swania: She was a really good swimmer and she was really white like the snow. She was the best swimmer in Greece but everybody was jealous of her so they bothered her all the time. She was always lonely and she thought that things were meant to be this way so she never talked to anyone, not even her family. One day she went to the pond to swim but she got a surprise, there was a girl swimming! She thought she was from another land since everybody knew that the pond was where Swania practiced so nobody dared to go there.

Swania was really nervous since she had never spoken to anyone; she got courage and shouted to the girl "What are you doing here? This is my pond!" The girl in fear started shaking and she cried "I'm sorry... I'm sorry! I didn't know this was your pond, I'm really sorry!" Swania talked to her again and told her "Don't worry it’s okay, I'm Swania and you are?" the girl answered "I'm Rosalina, I come from Sparta: Thats why I didn’t know this was your pond!" they started laughing and talked and swam for hours until it was sunset. They both said goodbye and agreed to come to the pond every day.

As time passed their friendship grew stronger and stronger, Swania didn't feel alone anymore and she talked with many people. She had never felt better until one day; Rosalina arrived at the pond and waited for hours. She knew something was wrong and so she went to search for Swania.

The town’s people told her that they had seen her following a strange woman into the forest, Rosalina went into the forest to search for Swania, after many hours she found the strange woman in a dark little house. She came inside the house and asked her "Where is my friend?” the strange woman answered "I have sent he rout of her misery!” Rosalina worried asked her again "What have you done?" the woman answered "I’ve turned her into the most beautiful thing!" Rosalina asked her a favor "Can you send me out of my misery too?" the woman nodded her head and turned her into the most beautiful thing.

Soon both found their selves in their pond and swam together for eternity; they were beautiful white birds and they sticked together forever. These birds are the most elegant I know and they will always be together, and these birds are the loyal swans.

The Rochester School

Rochester School

On our trip to the Rochester we saw many things like the solar panels which could be our option of producing light or energy and this in a few years would help us reduce about 66% of energy. The composters are a good option to take the left outs of the cafeteria and turn it into compost which could help us to create a new project to find out if it really works.

The water treatment plant is a great option to help by not throwing the contaminating water into some rivers; this treatment plant cleans about 90% the water which is way more than other companies do. Obviously this alternatives are not cheap they would cost more than 400,000,000 million pesos which is a lot but we should start becoming a green school not only to get recognized but to help our planet.

We could consider having a swimming pool since we could do as the Rochester school does, they have solar panels which heat the water and they have a process in which the swimming water is cleaned which would mean were not wasting water. This would also mean the support of sports in the school.

Ecological Questions

Ecological Questions

1. What is your idea of a sustainable school?

A school that's very green, that has an ecological conscience and good economics. I also believe that sustainability is both: economics and the environment. I really liked the 4 r's that are reuse, reduce, recycle and respect because we not only need to reuse, reduce and recycle we also have to respect our environment since it gives us many things.

2.Give a proposal to accomplish the goal of a green school.

My proposal would be to have an eco-workshop in which the school would show us how to reuse things, to learn about renewable energy and many other things. I would also think about having a requirement of doing ecological social work like picking up trash in the streets or going to a community to help them get an ecological conscience.

3.Which idea of the presentation did you like the most and how would you do it?

My favorite idea was the rain water reuse since Bogotá is a city in which rain is an important factor in weather, because of the constant days of rain. So we could use this water for toilets or to water plants. I would put some canals or buckets on the roof top that collected the rain water and distributed it to the toilets or to our orchard or gardens.
